WatchFreeUnder fifteen minutes

Ten minutes is enough to stop looking away.

Short, free, evidence-based films — starting with Gaslit.

The feature documentaries have their own library. This page is for the films you can watch on your phone, tonight, and send to one person: each with a note on what you'll see, why it works, and one thing to do afterward.

Before You Press Play

Three things the research says about watching

Short beats long.

A ten-minute film that gets finished does more than a two-hour film that gets paused. Attention, not information, is the scarce resource — and footage this hard is easier to sit through when you know it ends soon.

Watch, then do one thing.

Distress with nowhere to go becomes numbing. Every film here ends with a single next step — an email, a page, a restaurant. Take it while the feeling is still there.

Watch with someone.

People hold onto what they have seen when someone else saw it too. Psychologists call it shared reality. Send the link before you press play, not after.

Gaslit — three episodes, one lie

Project Slingshot is a UK group that exposes the gap between the welfare label and the farm. Gaslit is its flagship: three short investigations, each taking one reassuring story British shoppers are told — about pork, about chicken, about salmon — and following it to the place the story ends. Watch in order. Episode 1 is the hardest.

The Truth About CO2 Gas Chambers in the UK
Project Slingshot · 2026 · 9 min

British pork is sold as high-welfare, Red Tractor approved, lovingly reared. This episode follows the pigs to the one room the labels never mention: the carbon-dioxide stunning chamber, where most UK pigs spend their last minutes. The gap between the label and the chamber is the whole argument.

What you'll see: Undercover footage from inside a gas-stunning facility, including pigs in distress. The hardest of the three.
Then: two minutes, one email →

How Factory Farming Broke the Chicken
Project Slingshot · 2026 · 8 min

Over a billion chickens a year are raised in Britain, almost all of them a fast-growing breed selected to reach slaughter weight in six weeks. The film is about what that breeding does to a body — and about why the sheds are built so no one has to see it. It is the clearest seven minutes on broiler chickens we know of.

What you'll see: Footage inside broiler sheds; lame and collapsed birds. No slaughter.
Then: the numbers, if you want them →

The Hidden Truth About Salmon Farming in the UK
Project Slingshot · October 2026 · 11 min

Not Scottish in any meaningful sense, not wild, and not even naturally pink. Farmed salmon is marketed as a health food from glittering lochs; the cages tell a different story about parasites, mortality, and what a fish can feel. Fish are the animals our empathy reaches last — this is where it can start.

What you'll see: Underwater and pen footage of farmed salmon; sea-lice damage; dead and dying fish.
Then: read "The Fish in the Window" →

If Gaslit is more than you want tonight, start with one of these. Two are gentle. One is not.

Short film · Hopeful
73 Cows
Lockwood Film · 2018 · BAFTA, Best British Short

Jay Wilde, a Derbyshire beef farmer who could no longer send his cows to slaughter, gives the herd to a sanctuary and starts over. Not an exposé — a man changing his mind on camera.

Why it works: one identified person, one decision, no gore. The identified-victim effect, run in reverse: a single farmer is easier to feel than a million animals.

Short film · Narrative
Casa de Carne
Last Chance for Animals · 2019 · 2 min

A restaurant where you are handed a knife and shown to the back room before dinner. Fiction, two minutes, and it stays with people.

Why it works: it removes the distance. The meat paradox survives only because someone else does the killing somewhere else.

Glass Walls
PETA · narrated by Paul McCartney

"If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian." The 2009 film built on that line, still the most-watched single piece of footage on the subject.

Why it works: the narrator is someone the viewer already trusts, which lowers the identity defenses that usually slam shut.

Gaslit is the flagship. These two are the campaign around it — and the second is the most psychologically interesting thing on this page.

Don't Buy It: The KFC Chicken Story
Project Slingshot · 2026 · 5 min

Where KFC's British chicken actually comes from, in five minutes. Slingshot's most-watched film and the hinge of its "Don't Buy It" campaign.

Why it works: a named brand gives the viewer something concrete to do — or not do — this week.

Will They Buy It? 18 Brits Confront Factory Farming's Biggest Secret
Project Slingshot · 2026 · 11 min

Eighteen ordinary people are shown what they have been buying and filmed as they decide what to do next. Watch their faces, not the footage.

Why it works: this is moral disengagement and its collapse, on camera. People do not change from information; they change from watching themselves react to it.

Undercover
Take Your Dad To Work Day (Undercover in a Chicken Farm)
Project Slingshot · 2026 · 7 min

A father goes undercover with his son inside a British chicken farm. Short, personal, and quietly devastating.

Why it works: the family frame does what statistics cannot — it makes the viewer the parent in the shed.

Land of Hope and Glory
Surge / Earthling Ed · 2017 · 48 min

The UK's answer to Earthlings: footage from roughly a hundred British farms and slaughterhouses, every one of them legal, most of them "high welfare."

Why it works: it dismantles the "not here, not like that" defense by showing the country with the strictest welfare laws in the world.

Talk
You Will Never Look at Your Life in the Same Way Again
Ed Winters (Earthling Ed) · university lecture

The single best spoken argument on the subject — calm, funny, no footage, and built almost entirely from the audience's own objections.

Why it works: a lecture answers the objections in the order people actually raise them. Give this one to the friend who "could never watch the videos."

10:47
Sanctuary · Hopeful
Welcome to Surge Sanctuary
Surge · 11 min

The same organization that made Land of Hope and Glory, showing what the other side of the fence looks like. End here.

Why it works: arousal without an outlet turns into psychic numbing. A sanctuary is the outlet — it tells the viewer that the alternative already exists.

Seen enough? Do one thing.

An email to your Council member takes two minutes. A plant-based dinner takes one decision.
